Your Expertise Is Needed! ABC Committee Recruitment

Simon Sinek has said, “Working hard for something we don't care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion.” We hope, like us, you are passionate about ABC and will consider supporting our organization by joining a committee. We bet you did not even realize that ABC has over 25 different committees and special interest groups promoting business communication.

These groups of colleagues generate advice and materials on teaching methods, cross-cultural communication, research, consulting, teaching with technology, the marketing of the association, the promotion of our field, and much more. As an ABC member, you are eligible to share your expertise with a group of friendly, like-minded teachers and scholars to help promote excellence in bcomm—and this email is your invitation to do it!

The following committees are recruiting now:

  • Academic Environment (researches workplace issues and promotes the field of bcomm)
  • Business Practices (ensures that members keep up with workplace practices)
  • Diversity and Inclusion (broadens our membership by promoting diversity awareness and inclusiveness)
  • Graduate Studies (supports the efforts of graduate students and graduate programs in our field)
  • Marketing and Membership (helps develop ABC’s “brand” and generate a buzz about our organization)
  • Research (promotes the research activities of members and honors outstanding researchers)
  • Teaching (produces columns and presentations on teaching effectiveness and honors outstanding teachers)
  • Technology (helps ensure that ABC is using communication technologies to improve conferences, the website, and other association platforms)
  • Undergraduate Studies (promotes excellent undergraduate teaching and teaching materials)

In addition, all members are welcome to participate in these lively Special Interest Groups:

  • Business Writing and Speaking Centers
  • Consulting
  • Intercultural Communication
  • MBA
  • Rhetoric
  • Teaching with Technology

If you are wondering how long you would be a committee member, typically, you serve for three years; and generally, your committee work runs a calendar-year cycle (January through December).

So find out what each committee does and who’s on it by visiting the committee page of the Association’s website, http://businesscommunication.org/committees. Later today you will receive a survey link. I hope you will open that survey and mark your preferences by March 14. We will do our best to include you on your first choice of committee and have you networking with like-minded ABC folks, while building your own knowledge (and résumé) in the process. We will respond by April 14

ABC has amazing members who are dedicated, resourceful, and fun people. You can ensure ABC stays strong while making the field of business communication even more vibrant with your input! You will make a difference.
