2018 Student Competition Award

Purpose/Description

The Student Competition Award recognizes outstanding undergraduate student submissions to the annual ABC Student Competition. Winners of the award receive a monetary award contributed by the contest sponsor(s). By existing agreement, the Association for Business Communication permits the sponsors to publicize the names of the awardees in advertising.

Call for Contestants

The Association for Business Communication invites undergraduate students to apply for the 2018 Student Competition Award by responding to this year’s case. A panel of academic readers will review all qualifying entries, and using the criteria below select up to five contest finalists. Then, a panel of business professionals will read the finalists’ entries and select the winning responses. At ABC’s October 2018 annual international conference in Miami, winners will receive a plaque. In addition, the 1st place winner will receive $300, the 2nd place winner will receive $200, and the 3rd place winner will receive $100. Entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. (EDT) on Friday, April 27, 2018, to be considered. The winners will be informed during summer 2018.

Information for Instructors

The 2018 Student Competition Award is open to undergraduate students enrolled in a business communication course during Fall 2017 or Spring 2018. Instructors must be an active member of ABC and are welcome to enter two students in this annual contest. Students must work independently to prepare responses; team entries will not be considered. Please remember that the response must be submitted to the Association for Business Communication website by 11:59 p.m. (EDT) on Friday, April 27, 2018, to be considered for the contest.

Criteria

Students must be enrolled in a business communication or other appropriate course at the time of entry, and the faculty member of the course must sponsor the entry.

The winning entry will:

  1. Exhibit a clear understanding of the audience, use an appropriate tone and style, and establish the desired relationship.
  2. Accomplish the purpose of the message by stating a clear position on the issue and supporting that position with logical points/sub-points, insightful reasons, and/or persuasive examples.
  3. Be well-organized and easy to follow, with smooth transitions and headings/bullets/numbered items (if appropriate).
  4. Demonstrate superior mastery of vocabulary and superior facility with conventions (grammar, usage, and mechanics) of standard written English.
  5. Use an appropriate format and professional document design.

Nominations/Selection

Submissions may be made by students of any Association member. The ABC Student Competition Committee selects the award recipient(s).

Notification

The award winner will be notified approximately 90 days before the annual conference.
