CCCC Research Network Forum

The 22nd Annual Research Network Forum at CCCC will be held Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at the San Francisco, CA,  Hilton.  RNF is an all-day pre-conference event, open to all registered conference participants at no charge. We will be accepting online proposals for work-in-progress presenters, discussion leaders, and editors until October, 31, 2008 at www.rnfonline.com.  Roundtable discussion will group those with similar interest and discussion leaders who will facilitate discussion and offer suggestions for developing research projects and for finding suitable venues for publication.

We encourage anyone interested or involved in graduate education and/or scholarship—students, professors, mentors, and interested others—to participate in this important forum.  The RNF welcomes those pursuing work at any stage—from those just beginning to consider ideas to those whose projects are  ready to pursue publication and all those in between.  We are especially encouraging discussion leaders to also bring in a work-in-progress so they can model their research at our thematic roundtables.  As in past years, RNF sponsors a day-long collegial gathering of scholars, teachers, graduate students, discussion leaders, and thrill-seekers as they explore great topics in composition, rhetoric, writing, and pedagogy.   You may be on the RNF program in addition to having a speaking role at CCCC.  For more information, please contact chairs@rnfonline.com.

Call for Editor: Journal of Business Communication

posted March 6, 2008

The Association for Business Communication (ABC) invites applications for the editorship of the Journal of Business Communication. The journal has a well-established reputation for excellence, and it occupies a unique niche in the field of professional communication. The Journal of Business Communication is published by Sage Publications, a premier press in the social sciences.

The Journal of Business Communication was first published in 1963; it is one of the oldest research journals in the field and the only one with a primary emphasis on business communication. The editor is appointed for a 4-year term, with the possibility of additional terms. The new editor will begin April 1, 2009 producing his/her first issue in October 2009.

A prospective editor for the journal should:

  • Be a full-time faculty member and a member of ABC
  • Have a strong record of published scholarship in business communication
  • Have editorial and/or administrative experience
  • Be open to and conversant in the variety of disciplinary perspectives in business communication

In addition to demonstrating these qualifications, the proposals should include:

  • The applicant’s academic position and a description of his/her duties
  • A current vitae
  • Goals for the publication
  • A description of, and evidence for, the host institution’s ability to supplement the financial support provided by the Association.
  • Three letters of reference

Those planning to apply are encouraged to discuss their ideas and questions with Betty S. Johnson, Executive Director of ABC at +1-936-468-6280 or abcjohnson@sfasu.edu; or with Leena Louhiala-Salminen, Chair of the ABC Publications Board at Leena.Louhiala-Salminen@hse.fi

Applications are due by e-mail to Leena Louhiala-Salminen by August 1, 2008.

Jacqueline Harrison

Meada Gibbs Outstanding Teacher Award

Carole Roever

Carol Roever from Missouri Western State University received the Meada A. Gibbs Outstanding Teacher Award in recognition of her contributions to pedagogy: her international emphasis,  including taking students abroad for international business seminars, which certainly presents logistical challenges; her use of technology in the classroom; and her positive effect on students, as evidenced by a number of testimonials from students in the US and abroad. As her nominator, Nancy Schullery, stated in her letter, that Carol “has repeatedly demonstrated her commitment and ability to exemplify the highest teaching ideals.”

Kitty O. Locker Outstanding Researcher Award

Daphne Jameson

The Kitty O. Locker Outstanding Researcher Award, co-sponsored by McGraw-Hill Irwin, was awarded to Daphne Jameson, an associate professor in the School of Hotel Administration at Cornell University. Daphne's research uses "theories, methods and epistemologies of the humanities" to explore "how language is used in business, technical, and professional contexts." She was described by one reference as "the foremost business communication scholar who has brought literary and rhetorical theory into the field" of business communication.

Daphne's application of narrative theory and rhetorical analysis as frameworks for qualitative research in business communication are particularly significant, and her long record of publication in the leading journals in the field, including Business Communication Quarterly and Journal of Business Communication, reflects both the relevance and reach of her work.

Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award

Rebecca Pope Ruark

The first recipient of the Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation Award is Rebecca Pope-Ruark, a graduate of the Ph.D. Program in Rhetoric and Professional Communication at Iowa State University. Directed by Professor of English Dorothy Winsor, Rebecca's dissertation project, entitled "Challenging the Necessity of Organizational Community for Rhetorical Genre Use: Community and Genre in the Work of Integrated Marketing Communication Agency Writers," focuses on an ethnographic study of marketing writers for an agency contracting their services to various clients.

Professor Winsor calls Rebecca's work "interesting," "thorough," and "insightful" in its examination of a particular "unstable community" absent in previous research. Dr. Pope-Ruark is currently an assistant professor of professional writing at Elon College.
