ARRIVE EARLY FOR THE THURSDAY TOURS! In
the afternoon, visit two important communication
centers: Ryerson University's Roger's Communication
Centre, and Frontier College's "Beat the
Street" Learning Centre for street youth
and homeless adults.
- The Roger's Centre is considered Canada's
premier facility for degrees and research in
the fields of electronic media and digital communications.
New Media at the Rogers Centre merges interactive
communications and technologies: the schools
of Journalism, Radio and Television Arts, Image
Arts, and Computer Science create a dynamic
hub of design, research, and development.
- Beat the Street (BTS) was started in 1985
by two men who knew firsthand how street life
was a barrier to accessing jobs, housing, services,
and an improved quality of life. They created
an "asphalt academy" by using available
and relevant materials (signs, graffiti, license
plates, phone numbers, etc.) to help street
youth learn to read and write. Now they have
an award-winning facility that offers a variety
of literacy, technology, and creative programs.
HEAR SEVERAL DYNAMIC SPEAKERS from the
academic and business communities. Keynote speakers
include the following:
- Claude LaJeunesse, president of Ryerson
University, will welcome conference attendees
on Friday morning. LaJeunesse, also an engineer
and business executive, is a leading figure
in Canada‰s effort to create a first-rate knowledge
economy. He sits on several federal and corporate
boards around the country.
- Naseem Javed, a widely popular speaker
at corporate meetings, will tell us "Why Corporate
Images Die a Slow Death." Mr. Javed is the founder
of ABC Namebank in New York and Toronto, a company
concentrating solely on corporate nomenclature.
He advises CEO's of Fortune 500 and other leading
corporations on all matters of complex global
naming for e-business especially. He is the
author of two books, Naming for Power and Domain
Wars, and is featured in over 100 business articles
annually.
- John Daniel O'Leary, a luncheon speaker,
is president of Frontier College, a nationwide
literacy and learning organization based in
Toronto. Dr. O‰Leary has been involved in Canadian
education and literacy for over 28 years, working
with prisons, farm workers, street people, and
other groups. He will speak about workplace
literacy and Frontier College's partnership
with colleges to establish literacy programs
throughout Canada.
- Michael Dewson, another luncheon speaker,
is associate vice president of faculty affairs
at Ryerson. He oversees the University's Planning
Office as well as Learning and Teaching Office,
the Digital Media Projects Office, and the Writing
and Math Centres. Dr. Dewson, a psychologist
by training, will speak about preparing students
and workers for the New Economy and Ryerson‰s
role in that effort.
